California StATE TEAM
How to become a CST coach?

Becoming a CST Head Coach is a competitive, merit-based process designed to identify and promote the most capable, data-driven, and athlete-focused coaches in California. The process begins with statewide recruitment, where interested coaches apply through the CWPA website. Selected coaches participate in a series of events—3P Testing, the Top 50 Tournament, and the Top 24 Showcase—each offering opportunities to demonstrate leadership, strategic thinking, and player development skills. Ultimately, coaching performance, team results, and professionalism determine who earns the honor of leading a California State Team.
Steps to Become a CST Head Coach:
-
Step 1: Apply Online – Submit your coaching interest form through the CWPA website to be considered for CST staff roles.
-
Step 2: Participate in 3P Testing – Join as a testing coach during the statewide physical testing events (February 7 in Fresno and Bay Area).
-
Step 3: Coach in the Top 50 Tournament – Selected coaches will lead teams in a round-robin tournament using data-driven drafts based on 3P testing results.
-
Step 4: Advance to the Top 24 Showcase – Coaches of the top-performing teams from the Top 50 Tournament move on to the Showcase, where they draft and coach elite athletes.
-
Step 5: Earn the CST Head Coach Role – The coach who wins the Top 24 Showcase Game becomes the CST Head Coach for their age group, leading the team at the Cal Cup State Finals.
